The Red Maple Community of Practice
Busting Burnout for Helping Professionals.
My name is Raechel, and I would like to warmly welcome you to the Red Maple Community of Practice for Helping Professionals (the "COP"). The COP is a non-profit arm of Red Maple, dedicated to those that do the unique work of caregiving, as therapists, coaches, clinicians and counsellors. Our headquarters is located at 41 Erb Street East, where we're working to help both ourselves and our colleagues keep long, vibrant careers.
My vision for the COP is to create a community of refreshment, support, and dignity for helping professionals. This special group of people face real, occupational hazards such as burnout, empathy fatigue, and vicarious trauma. I believe the protection we need lies in a strong sense of community together, which is what we're about. I'd love to hear from you! Send me an e-mail or, beginning July, 2020, stop by 41 Erb Street East in uptown Waterloo. Let's have a cup of coffee and get to know each other!
The occupational hazards of a career in mental health care include:
Emotional exhaustion (being depleted and isolated)
Depersonalization (cynicism, automation, or negativity)
Reduced Personal Accomplishment (low energy and loss of creativity
Guilt and Shame (that we cannot be / do enough)
Demoralization (discouragement resulting from powerlessness to change things)
Imposter syndrome (the fear that we are frauds)
